History
|
| |
The parish has its beginnings back between 1810-1820 when a parcel of land was donated to the Archdiocese of St. Louis. The parish was actual a mission parish for the most part until 1891 although the name of the parish, St. Anthony of Padua was officially established in 1861 by a traveling priest, Father Marrs. The first actual church was constructed in 1862 of logs on a stone foundation and dedicated by the Reverend Baukhaus. This structure existed in what is now the St. Anthony Parish Cemetery on Acid Mine Road. A new church building was completed in 1891 due south of the current church building on the corner of Springfield Road and Church St. This church building was built adjacent to a two-story brick house that served as a school and rectory over the years. The first parish school was initiated under the pastorship of the Reverend Joseph Little who became the Parish Priest in 1919.
This first school was held in two rooms of the white brick building attached to the church but soon the growing school enrollment forced a move to a "grantix" across the street. This was a two-story, ten-room house that had been given to the parish just before Rev. Little's arrival and was being used as the rectory. It stood on the site of the current Strauser's Drug Building. Father Little relocated his rectory to the original white brick edifice next to the church and the entire ten-room house was turned over for school classrooms and living quarters for the school's teaching sisters. The first graduating class was in 1936. Father Little remained in the parish until 1941 when he was replaced by the Reverend Joseph M. O'Toole (later Monsignor O'Toole). Father O'Toole inaugurated a Parish (Labor Day) Picnic in 1941, the first to be held in 20 years that turned into an overwhelming success and helped to raise money for the construction of the current school building.
In 1941, the Rev. Joseph O'Toole was appointed with the charge of building a modern Day School for the Parish to replace the dilapidated building being used. Through much maneuvering of Fr. O'Toole, he undertook the building of a concrete and stone school building in 1942. This was the only school built during World War II. This was the beginning of the first year of WWII for the U.S. An embargo was put on construction of all buildings except for military purposes. Fr. O'Toole went to Washington D.C. to obtain and achieve permission to construct a non-military building. In 1946, Father O'Toole was transferred back to a parish in St. Louis and was replaced by the Reverend Arthur J. Ryan.
Religious instruction for public school students started in the 1920s with a 2 week summer program. Under the pastorship of the Reverend Clarence Winkler (Pastor 1958-1976), the program was expanded to a weekly class and today the parish School of Religion continues with weekend classes for all students not attending St. Anthony Parish School.
The two-story, four-room school with full basement was completed in 1943 at a cost of less than $25,000. The school was originally staffed by the Dominican Sisters until 1946. The School Sisters of Notre Dame undertook the instruction at the Parish School until recently. The school is presently staffed by six full-time lay teachers, a principal, and other part-time instructors and volunteers.
The current church building was constructed in 1963-1964 and dedicated in 1964 under the pastorship of Father Winkler. The Parish celebrated its 100th anniversary as a Parish in 1991 under the pastorship of the Reverend Theodore Brunnert.
