ELECTIVE WORKSHOP INFORMATION

Listed below are complete descriptions of all the workshops to be presented. After selecting the ones you wish to attend, note the scheduled times for their presentation and the room number (following the descriptions).
(NOTE: All workshops are NOT presented each time, some are presented three times, others twice and a few only once. Make careful note of the scheduled times for the ones you wish to attend.)

Due to the fact that invariably some workshops fill to capacity, we strongly encourage you to have a “back-up”choice for each session so you will not be disappointed.

ARRANGING AND REHEARSING THE RHYTHM SECTION Practical instruction for using a rhythm section. Noted choral and instrumental arranger ED HOGAN will cover the basics of arranging a “lead sheet” and share rehearsal ideas to improve your band.

BIBLE AND DRAMA: A POWERFUL COMBINATION Collegiate-level drama professor OWEN ROBERTSON leads this interactive workshop exploring the mixture of drama and Bible study.

BLENDING HYMNS WITH PRAISE & WORSHIP SONGS DON CHAPMAN regularly offers up creative worship ideas through his website (WorshipIdeas.com). Come to this session and learn the secrets of seamlessly blending hymns with praise songs to craft a worship experience for all ages. Free music handouts.

BUILDING PRAISE TEAMS & ENSEMBLES…THE PEOPLE WE CHOOSE DERRIC JOHNSON has led ensembles that have sung everywhere from daily at Walt Disney World to courts of kings and the President. In this session, he is evaluating the four requirements of platform personnel: Spiritual Attitude, Musical Ability, Physical Appearance and Personality Sizzle! How to avoid the 5 Big No-No’s.

CHART ATTACK A crash course in church orchestration for both amateur and professional musicians, including scoring for contemporary band and small ensemble. JULIAN BOND is a noted keyboardist and arranger with international credentials from Europe to Broadway!

CHORD CHARTS AND KEYBOARD PARTS TERESA HOLLIDAY, staff accompanist for FBC (Sptbg, SC) examines how to best utilize different keyboards and use to best utilize the various “sounds” they provide in worship services.

CHOREOGRAPHY & STAGING FOR YOUNGER CHOIRS Noted choreography teacher and consultant SHEA ROLAND helps you learn the latest moves and techniques for younger choirs as she covers new staging and prop ideas to help make your movement hip/cool and exciting.

CHURCH 2.0 Creative worship consultant GREG ATKINSON leads a discussion on innovation and creativity in the local church. We’ll also learn about using Web 2.0 technologies for ministry.

COMMUNICATING TO THOSE WHO LISTEN WITH THEIR EYES Join noted creative worship expert GREG ATKINSON as he offers a practical and informative look at how we can use media and our imagination to reach people in a digital world.

CONTEMPORARY STYLINGS/TECHNIQUE & NUTRITION Having done vocal coaching with everyone from Britney Spears to the Backstreet Boys, MARK GOFF has the credentials! In this session he shares how to use the techniques many of today’s Christian and secular artists use to get that contemporary sound you are looking for!

COPYRIGHT LAW & THE CHURCH: THE EIGHT KEYS OF THE COPYRIGHT LAW ROD RACHINSKI of Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI) offers simple and easy-to-understand overviews of the copyright laws and how they pertain specifically to the church. An invaluable resource seminar that could keep you straight both legally and ethically!

CURRENT & FUTURE WORSHIP TRENDS IN THE CHURCH Join ROD RACHINSKI of CCLI as he presents a fascinating look at current and future worship and music trends as reported by thousands of churches of all sizes, representing over 100 different denominational groupings.

CUTTING EDGE STAGE DESIGN Using his years of concert tour production, as well as his background from his days on church staff in the Atlanta, GA area, JEFF WINCHELL offers ideas on how to use today’s technology to create unforgettable services from worship to the word.

GET OFF THE PAGE, GET INTO THE SPIRIT As a keyboardist, JULIAN BOND has performed internationally as well as served as accompanist on Broadway musicals. He offers this piano workshop for those who need the extra boost of confidence to play spontaneously. Includes tips on transitions, underscoring and accompanying.

GET REAL! (DRAMATIC ARTS MINISTRY) ERIN BOND, who has done everything from script writing in a large church drama ministry to hosting Nickelodeon’s Game Lab at Universal Studios (Orlando, FL), shares her passion that church drama doesn’t have to be “churchy”. Techniques for challenging your actors/artists to “get real” for maximum impact as well as original script ideas are covered in this session.

GIVE ME SOMETHING THAT WORKS! Join STEVE PHILLIPS, who oversees a large music ministry at First Baptist Church (Columbia, SC), as he looks and offers practical, field-tested ideas that work on how to select and motivate volunteers, attendance builders, and keeping your choir “up” for everything from Sundays to special programs.

GIVING DIRECTIONS: KNOWING WHERE YOU’RE GOING & HOW TO GET THERE Join drama professor (at North Greenville College) OWEN ROBERTSON as he covers the basics of directing for theatre in the church.

HIGH TECH – LOW BUDGET JEFF WINCHELL has traveled as stage director for many major Christian concert tours as well as served on church staff in a local church. In this session, he is addressing stage design from media to lighting, and how to get the most “bang for your buck”.

HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM YOUR SINGING VOICE Again this year, we are pleased to welcome back DR. TOM CLEVELAND from the Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN) School of Medicine. In this session, he shares singing guidelines that are easy to follow and implement that will help you get the most from your singing voice!

HOW TO INVEST IN YOUR VOLUNTEERS One of the challenges most music ministers face is the recruiting and retaining of volunteers. In this seminar, noted songwriter and worship team leader LAURA STORY discusses ways to invest in your volunteers spiritually, relationally and musically.

“IN BETTER HANDS” CREATIVE MOVEMENT Noted choreographic artist GREG CAGLE teaches movements to the popular song sung by Christian artist Natalie Grant. Highly interactive class, this is a great session to learn about worshiping through creative movement. Basic steps to bring glory to God.

INSTRUMENTAL METHODS FOR CHOIR DIRECTORS Join CALVIN BOLTON, who oversees the orchestral program at First Baptist Church of North Spartanburg (SC), for this session that covers developing rehearsal strategies and scoring techniques for brass, percussion, strings, and woodwinds.

KEEP YOUR VOICE HEALTHY DR. TOM CLEVELAND, one of the nation’s foremost throat and voice authorities, covers the six most important things you can do to insure health vocally. Easy-to-remember guidelines for keeping your voice healthy and productive.

KEYBOARDS IN WORSHIP Led by noted choral arranger BRADLEY KNIGHT, this workshop examines how modern church music is constantly evolving, and how church keyboardists must do the same. Topics discussed will include Bradley’s infamous “left-hand” technique, playing in a guitar-based band, creating new sounds, and using vintage sounds.

LIVING CARD For many years, BOB BOYNTON was “the” creative genius behind every set and backdrop you experienced at Walt Disney World (Orlando, FL). Now he brings that expertise to the church as he shares his latest creation for a church pageant in Wyoming he produced. Bob will also handle questions from the floor as he shares his techniques, tips and tricks for set design and creation.

MICROPHONES & MONITORS FOR YOUR VOCAL ENSEMBLES BILL THRASHER has overseen sound for everything from Billy Graham Crusades to PromiseKeepers conferences. One of the most valued experts in the field leads this session that helps you understand microphone requirements and techniques, and monitor loudspeaker requirements and techniques for use in your music ministry.

MINISTERING TO GOD – WORSHIP’S FIRST PRIORITY PART 1 Noted composer and church worship leader MARTY PARKS takes a look at the biblical precedents and practical applications for God-centered, not style-driven, worship.

MINISTERING TO GOD – WORSHIP’S FIRST PRIORITY PART 2 MARTY PARKS offers a summary and conclusion concerning worship’s first priority.

MOVEMENT FOR NON-MOVERS (GOD RODS) JEFF SMITH, well-known drama performer and consultant, developed the use of God Rods (dowel rod sticks) to interpret lyrics to contemporary Christian music or scripture text. This class will be a broad overview of concepts, choreography, and precepts for team building that will help you start and/or maintain your movement ministry. Purposeful movement to powerful music with appropriate choreography!

ON THE WAY TO WORSHIP WARMUPS Noted vocal coach and expert MARK GOFF, who has worked with countless pro singers, shares how they get their voices warm on the way to the show (or how not to wait until the third song to be warmed up!).

ORCHESTRATION Q&A Come with your questions and receive specific answers on how to write for your instrumental ensemble from noted arranger BRADLEY KNIGHT. Topics will cover voicing and harmony, balancing orchestra sections, appropriately writing notes (and rests!) and utilizing synthesized sounds.

PATTERNS & BOLTS AND NEEDLES & PINS: COSTUMES PLEASE! Organizing a first century costume ministry: pre-pageant, pageant in progress, post-pageant. Recruiting and equipping team, prayerful planning of resources. CAROLYN USHER, who leads this session, has worked on major pageants for many years.

PLAYING FOR WORSHIP SERVICES - PIANO, ORGAN, KEYBOARDS Join FBC (Sptbg, SC) staff accompanist TERESA HOLLIDAY for a look at some of the “tricks” that church musicians use: modulation, transposition, charts, and blended worship.

PRAISE & WORSHIP CHOREOGRAPHY FOR YOUNGER CHOIRS Beginner to intermediate movement for praise and worship teams and special parts led by noted choreographic consultant SHEA ROLAND. This session covers current styles of dance as well as teaching techniques.

PREPARING A SACRED PROGRAM FOR A SECULAR AUDIENCE In this session, noted visionary and choral music programming expert DERRIC JOHNSON stresses that outreach must be included in our ministries. Here are practical answers looking past the “should we?” to the “how can we?”. Covering concepts, themes and music.

PRESCHOOL PRAISE’NTATIONS: AGE APPROPRIATE MUSIC & PROGRAMS FOR 3’S, 4’S AND 5’S Fun music for preschoolers with noted children’s choir consultant DARLENE ABBOTT. Learn how to teach the songs, move with them and how to put together appropriate programs with them, or use them in children’s worship.

PURCHASING & UPGRADING YOUR CHURCH AUDIO SYSTEMS What everyone really needs to know about purchasing and upgrading their church audio systems. BILL THRASHER is perhaps the most noted church sound reinforcement consultant in America today. Known for his work with churches as well as large stadium events, he has seen every challenge imaginable for proper sound reinforcement.

RECIPES FOR HOMEMADE WORSHIP TOOLS & INSTRUMENTS Children’s choir expert PAM ANDREWS teaches you how to turn trash into treasure by creating fun devices of worship for your children. In this workshop you will actually create and play your own homemade instrument as well as jump and jive to the beat as you praise the Lord with creative worship tools.

RHYTHM SECTION ESSENTIALS CALVIN BOLTON, who oversees an extensive instrumental program at First Baptist Church of North Spartanburg (SC), shares how a strong rhythm section allows you to lead with more freedom and confidence. Learn how to communicate what you want.

“SAFE” CREATIVE MOVEMENT GREG CAGLE, who regularly leads sessions nationwide on creative worship movement, instructs on another top hit by Natalie Grant. Knowing we have everything we need in Christ should make you want to praise him.

SCRIPTURE REP RAPS Drama and movement consultant and performer JEFF SMITH covers music, movement and MEMORY in this session. Music is the most influential media form in culture today. Learn how to use the power of music and movement to help your children learn and remember scripture!

7 HABITS OF SUCCESSFUL CHOIR BUILDERS JIM FAULL has led choirs and music programs of all sizes, and in this session, he shows you how to build your choir larger than your personal charisma. These principles really work!
SHEPHERDS & BEGGARS, PHARISEES & KINGS: THE COMPLETE 1ST CENTURY WARDROBE CAROLYN USHER has served as the wardrobe coordinator on major productions for years at the Immanuel Bible Church (Springfield, VA). In this session, she covers building the wardrobe: sandals and headgear to tunics and accessories. The physics of fabric and color selection. 10 costume commandments!

SINGING WORKSHOP Join DR. TOM CLEVELAND, one of the nation’s foremost throat and voice authorities, for a “hands-on” workshop with a positive environment that helps volunteers (you can volunteer or just watch!) maximize their vocal potential.

SMALL CHOIR REHEARSAL TECHNIQUES Noted choral arranger and minister of music ED HOGAN offers techniques designed to minimize downtime, develop sight-singing abilities, and improve the overall sounds of your group. Beneficial for any vocal ensemble, especially small groups and youth choirs.

She is a noted children’s choir consultant who co-authors children’s music curriculum with Kathie Hill.

WORSHIPING THROUGH BROKENNESS All of us have had times in our lives when singing God’s praises may not come easily. In this workshop, we will take a look at what God’s word says about worshiping in the midst of trials. LAURA STORY leads this session, based on her personal experiences with pain and how it affected her songwriting and worship-leading. Laura’s best-known composition is the powerful worship song, Indescribable.
